Volunteer Opportunities

At Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Ministries, volunteers are some of our most important assets. We rely on volunteers to help us serve refugees and immigrants in Chicago. Without the day-to-day involvement of volunteers, IRIM could not begin to provide the quality and breadth of services we do today. So, whether you are interested in giving a helping hand occasionally, on a permanent basis, or with a group, IRIM strives to provide the most enriching experience possible—for both volunteers and for those they serve.

What kind of volunteer positions are available with IRIM?

Volunteers are needed to assist in tutoring, mentoring, childcare, citizenship, refugee advocacy, youth programs and office support. If you feel you have special skills to offer, we will work with you to place you in the most fitting volunteer position
.

Would you like to volunteer with IRIM?

Qualifications for volunteering with our agency include:
• cross-cultural sensitivity
• patience and flexibility working with non-native English speakers
• dedication and commitment to the position and the person or people you are working with
• an open mind and a desire to learn and experience new things

What if I've never tutored, mentored, or taught citizenship before?

Each volunteer will be asked to participate in a training to learn more about our organization and working with refugees, as well as some of the basic skills needed for working in various programs. The Volunteer Coordinator and the Director of the program you are interested in will notify you of the next training.
